Some days become special days. But you don’t know they will be memorable when you wake up. You can’t plan or force it. You gotta live your life and let those special days happen to you. Maybe it’s the day you met your wife or husband. Maybe the day you got a promotion or a special project. Maybe it’s the day a sibling flew to surprise you. Maybe it’s a day you won the lottery. Perfect days can be perfect because they had no expectation to become great. For a big planner like me, it’s kind of hard sometimes to let control go and realize, those days come by surprise only. So then, what happens to people like me? We try to recreate those days.
Have you ever had the urge to recreate a day from your past? Why do they never live up to our expectations? Because we are trying to reach the kind of high that only the first time can give to us. Just like the first bite of a chocolate cake, or the first sip of your favorite drink, every bite and sip afterwards is just another try to feel the same high of the first. Exactly because now we have those expectations that it won’t be same. Don’t get me wrong, they can still be fun. But I have found that it’s best to leave them alone, safe in our faded happy memory.
It’s within hope of new special days that I go to bed every night, the unknown is incredible. The kinds of things allow us to imagine, only the unknown can give us. I’m trying everyday to allow space for surprises, for serendipity, for life. Letting go of all my expectations, even for a moment, can be quite calming. Give it a try. Take a deep breath and with the exhale let it all go. Be here, right now, in the moment, and feel the freedom from our own self rigidness.
