Going all in

For most us, creating a new habit is hard work. We try and try and fail many times. There are a lot of books that will explain the reason for that, The Power of Habit is a great one. But every time we decide to create a habit we don’t go all in. And in my opinion, that’s why we fail so often. I believe it’s easier to do something 100% than 95%.

I have tried to eat vegan many times before, but I would always end up coming back to cheese. Why? because I hadn’t decided on only eating vegan 100% with no exceptions. I used to make exceptions like: but there is no other option, but it’s my favorite food, but I’m going out with friends… and the excuses just grew. A year ago I decided: I only eat vegan 100% of the time. No exceptions, ever. Same with soda, I just don’t drink it. And I want to do the same with sugar.

Exercise? It’s not 3-4x a week, it has to be, I move my body every single day, with no exception. Reading? I read before bed every single night. Want to write? Write every morning with no exception. Do not allow yourself to find an exception, we, humans, are very good at finding or creating them. We don’t do moderation well. Trust me, it is easier to go all in. It sounds wrong, but once you decide to go all in, the decision making stops, and you don’t need to worry about it. You can’t just have one cigarette once a week. You either smoke or you don’t. That’s why I wake up at 5am every day. There is no sleeping in on weekends, I can always nap if I want to. It’s a lot easier to continue a habit than restarting it.

The problem is, most of us don’t really want to create a difficult habit, we lie to ourselves that we do. I don’t really want to stop eating sugar or I would. Now stop to think, which habit do you REALLY want to create? Be strong in why you want this and are you willing to do it forever or never do it again? The first few days, weeks and couple months will be a challenge, but persist and it will become so easy, it will be who you are. And then, don’t ever allow an exception to creep in and make you start the process all over again. Start by creating an easier habit and see for yourself. Go all in. It works.

Thanks for reading.
