I am always stumbling upon this notion of mastery. Be able to do things with such high intensity and quality that people will admire your achievement forever. All the people we talk about, the ones that really did something amazing like Mozart, Da Vinci, Jordan, Gandhi, Robin Williams, Hemingway, Einstein… they were all masters of their field. They weren’t just ok, they didn’t do a billion things half way. They went all in. They gave everything to their craft.
I believe for a person to make history the right way, they need to become a master of something. If you want to be remembered you need to achieve a level that most wouldn’t dare. But why most of us dabble into many things and never master anything? Why is it hard to put in those many hours into one single craft? Is it because it’s hard to make a choice? Or is it because sticking around when things don’t seem to be working out is a challenge. Is it because we are distracted and can’t focus? Or we don’t know what to focus on? Are we fighting boredom? Is it because we don’t believe we can? There are so many options for the reason why. It could be a mix of all.
But more important than making history is to feel fulfilled, happy. And that’s why mastery matters. Because we all want to matter. And we can. But we need to decide that our lives will be for something bigger than ourselves, we need to commit 100%. Can you do that? Can I do that? Commit to mastering something for the rest of my life? If we can say yes, and if we can choose the right thing, we will matter too. And yes, of course we all matter already to our closest friends and family, but I believe we are all meant to contribute to the world. That’s how the human race evolves, by each one of us giving our absolute best.
Imagine a life with purpose, where you wake up everyday and you know what to do. Imagine working for something bigger than yourself, imagine creating something so amazing that the rest of the world will thank you for. It doesn't matter if you love science, sports or arts, the world needs all of it. Any passion you have can be your thing, take time when choosing and let it consume your life, enjoy the process and feel what real happiness is. Some say to master something you need to spend a minimum of 3 hours a day for 10 years. If you could do something for 3 hours a day, maybe from 5am to 8am, maybe from 6pm to 9pm, but everyday of your life, what would that be? If you have the answer you own it to yourself to do it. You own it to the world. And if you don’t have the answer, you need to find out ASAP.
