Lately it has been brought to attention by many people, bot online and in person, that not everything I do needs to have a monetary return. I’m embarrassed to say that I forgot about this notion. That one can do something simply for enjoyment. It’s ok to take cooking lessons just for the sake of cooking for yourself. Or to learn how to paint, take photos, crochet or whatever else we want to learn.
We live in a time where entrepreneurship has been put on a pedestal. We have become obsessed with making money our of our passions, and unless that passion doesn’t have a chance to become profitable we let that one go in pursuit of a “better” one. What happened to doing things just for fun? I think they used to be called hobbies. I’m trying to think if I still have any.
Before I became a full time artist, I used to paint for fun. But ever since I decided to turn my passion into a career, it has consumed all of my time, leaving me with no time for hobbies. I kept telling myself that is ok because now I do what I love everyday. But really, how many days a week I spend just painting what I want for fun? 0. It’s so rare. I’m always working on a client or portfolio piece. It’s not the same. So here I am, looking for a hobby, or better, stopping myself to seeing everything I do or could do as a side hustle, and saying yes, I will learn how to do BLANK just for myself. Now I just have to figure out when I can fit that in my life. I will probably start with something that is already not optional like a type of exercise or maybe cooking more.
Thanks for reading.
