I read the The Life Changing Magic of Tidying Up (actually I listened to on Audible.com) not that long ago. I even wrote a post about why I didn't like it. So when I heard about The Life Changing Magic of Not Giving a F*ck I got curious. I decided to buy it on Audible as well.
But I did not like this book either. Here is why.
The idea of stop worrying about everything and actually care about what makes me happy sounded incredible. I do agree with a lot of things in the book. Including saying more no, being honest and nice at the same time. Telling your family and friends politely that you are just not that into whatever they are asking you to do/go. But here is the problem with the book in my opinion. The language. The way it's written is almost too offensive. Not just because the ridiculous amount of times she curses, but the lack of respect. Respect to our intelligence. It's almost like a big joke, treating us like we are just dumb. And for that reason, I stopped listening to it 75% of the way. I got her point and I appreciate the nudge we all need, but she could have treated us a bit more intelligently. The book can have the most amazing wisdom but if it's written unintelligently it's not going to convince many. Or at least, it won't help me take it seriously. I do feel like she took on the opportunity to make money of a best seller (good for her) and created an excuse to write a book that otherwise wouldn't be this popular. I feel as dumb as she thinks I am by buying into the trend and listening to the book. A waste of time and money? I don't think so, everything that we go through in life we get something out of it, but I do not recommend it.
