I’m not sure which media I like the most yet but I got choose because it’s important to focus on one to develop a style. I’m giving myself this month of February to try out the medias that I’m interested in and see if I can pick a favorite. This week I tried the combination of markers and color pencils. In college all of my work was done in pencil, markers and color pencils. I didn’t really use anything else. So I didn’t think this was going to be as much of a challenge as it was.
I tried to illustrate different things like food, animals, fashion and some objects. It was very interesting to see how different they look done with markers.
I’m not sure if I like it more than watercolor because the markers make the illustration look more stylized or less realistic.
I also found that the color pencils hurt my hand, because I had to put some pressure to get it how I like.
There is also the question of price, since markers you really need to have the color you need. In watercolor you can just mix the colors and create whatever you need.
Some sketches came out very interesting like this model.
and this food plate.
I have found extremely important to give it a week of trying because the first sketches didn’t come out as good as the latest ones, and if I had given up, I wouldn’t have know.
I also get a bit irritated to have to sharpen the pencils so often since I need them really sharp for details.
It was also interesting to try the markers with different papers, not just the ones meant for markers because it helped create different looks to the illustrations.
I guess I’m leaning more towards watercolor right now but I don’t want to give up on markers just yet.
Next week I will be trying ink, by itself and in combination with graphite, color pencils, markers and watercolor.
Hopefully by the end of the month I will know better which media I want to focus on for a while.
